BENGALURU: Families of farmers who committed suicide will get compensation as soon as the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report on the deaths reaches the district deputy commissioners.

Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda announced this in the Assembly on Thursday.

In response to the Opposition BJP’s charge that the government was delaying releasing compensation, he said the government has already released funds to all the deputy commissioners to expedite the process of distributing compensation.

However, the BJP members shouted slogans and demanded that the state government release money without waiting for the forensic report.

Gowda said the government cannot give compensation until it gets the postmortem report.

This led to a din with both the Opposition and the ruling party members engaging in verbal altercations, blaming one another for the present fate of farmers in Karnataka.

Home Minister K J George charged that the BJP government at the Centre has not come to the rescue of farmers. Deputy Speaker H N Shivashankar Reddy, who was presiding, adjourned the House ending the heated debate.

NHRC Notice to State

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about 16 farmers ending their lives in Mandya district.

“The spate of deaths due to suicides by farmers is of grave concern and calls for prompt and quick remedial steps by the government,” the commission stated in the notice issued to Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee seeking a full report within four weeks.
